VILNIUS OLD TOWN
The UNESCO-inscribed old town of Vilnius is the heartland of the city. Its old palaces, narrow streets and countless churches of different faiths are what attracts tourists to Vilnius.
GEDIMINAS TOWER
Gediminas Tower is a remnant of the ancient fortifications of Vilnius’ Upper Castle. Perched high above Old Town on top of Castle Hill, the tower is named for Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania who made Vilnius the capital of his reign in the early 1300s.
CHURCH OF ST. ANNE
St. Anne’s Church is a Roman Catholic church in Vilnius’ Old Town. It is a prominent example of both Flamboyant Gothic and Brick Gothic styles. St. Anne’s is a prominent landmark in the Old Town of Vilnius that enabled the district to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. And it is one of the most interesting examples of Gothic architecture in Lithuania.
TRAKAI ISLAND CASTLE
Trakai Island Castle is located in Trakai, Lithuania, on Galve lake. The historical Gothic Palace was built by Lithuanian dukes in XIV century and served as their residence, since the city was a capital at the time.
UŽUPIS
The self-proclaimed “Republic” of Užupis is Vilnius’ Bohemian and artistic district. It has its own anthem, constitution, president, bishop, two churches, the Bernadine Cemetery – one of the oldest in the city -, seven bridges, and its own guardian called The Bronze Angel of Užupis, who was put in the centre of the district in 2002.
