Do you feel trapped in Project Plan Prison? Do you have to report to the Project Warden about meaningless milestones to give him or her the illusion of control? Is the project plan is based on naive and idealised assumptions, so that you have to dig a tunnel to escape from fantasy to do the real work?
Much IT work is too unpredictable to be described in detail in project plans. Things just happen, so we have to experiment. This is a natural characteristic of the Complex Adaptive Systems that we increasingly have to deal with.

While almost all organizations are undertaking a digital transformation and have a digital strategy, there is a huge skill gap to deliver the technology and update the processes in today’s IT organizations. According to Gartner “70% of employees have not mastered the skills they need for their jobs today, and 80% lack the skills needed for both their current role and their future career.”

Observability is More than Logs, Metrics & Traces You know the drill: DevOps is using tool(s) X. So obviously, observability can be solved by throwing some tools together as well; generally logs, metrics, and traces often called the pillars of observability.
“Containers are the new ZIP format to distribute software” is a fitting description of today’s development world. However, it is not always that easy and this talk highlights the development of Elastic’s container strategy over time:
* Docker images: A new distribution model.
* Docker Compose: Local demos and a little more.

How do we make sure our DevOps processes are working for the business? With all of the time and money spent in people, processes, and tools, it is important to understand how business ideas turn into business value. What kinds of new bottlenecks are emerging in your organization? With Value Stream Management, development teams are working to streamline every aspect of their day to day processes, from planning, to code review, and delivery. High performing teams work to improve four key metrics that help ensure your Value Stream is efficient.

Does running your application on multiple machines mean it’s highly available? Technically yes, but the term HA is already more than that. Take Kubernetes installation, if you install it on AWS, it’s not considered HA unless your master nodes are in different availability zones, not only on different machines. And actually, there is much more on that topic.

Everybody knows that we need a cache, but where exactly to place it? Inside your application or as a layer in front of it? In the container or outside the container? In the era of Cloud Native and Microservices these questions get even more complicated.

Nowadays teams should collaborate fo achieve higher goals, more quality better outcomes. And they should work in interdisciplinary and diverse teams to be able to solve complex tasks. This is what you do in DevOps! But whenever people should do things together, conflict is always very close by, especially when the original work they have to do aims at different goals – one of the core issues in Dev and Ops environment.

Starting with AWS, the major cloud providers offer different options to run a MySQL or a MySQL compatible database on the cloud. A new approach is to rely on so called serverless (relational) databases like Aurora Serverless that offer both traditional TCP connections and HTTP API access. Can serverless really be the future?

Rob Bos wants to tell you a story, a story about an event that spanned 35 countries, reached 10.000 participants, involved 1.400 websites and databases, raised 8 disruptions on those websites and even caused Azure DevOps outages. In which we reached the limits of the cloud and still were able to spend only half of the budget.
